Google Workspace Introduces Password-Free Access Using Passkeys

Businesses bid farewell to Google passwords after successful consumer launch

Google Workspace users can now say goodbye to passwords and embrace the future of login security with passkeys. Following the successful consumer launch last month, businesses can now join the password-less movement, eliminating the hassle of traditional passwords. This exciting development brings a new level of convenience and enhanced security to over 9 million organizations using Google Workspace and Google Cloud accounts.

Passkeys, supported by tech giants Google, Apple, and Microsoft, offer a groundbreaking alternative to passwords. With passkey support integrated into browsers and operating systems, users can seamlessly exchange public-private keypairs with websites using the WebAuthn standard, granting instant access without the need for passwords. Most passkey implementations require a portable device like a phone, acting as an authentication tool similar to app-based 2FA or SMS.

This evolutionary step in user authentication aims to address the limitations of passwords. Passkeys remove the text box entirely, ensuring a higher level of security. Unlike traditional passwords, passkeys cannot be written down, reused, or easily phished, as the browser manages and associates them with specific websites.

While the benefits of passkeys are evident, there are some considerations to keep in mind. Platform support is still in its early stages, with limited compatibility for Linux and Chrome OS. Additionally, passkeys must be synced within the respective OS ecosystems of Apple, Google, or Microsoft, creating limitations for cross-platform usage. However, alternative password management solutions like 1Password are working towards passkey support, promising synchronization across multiple platforms.

For business Workspace users, passkeys can be used as a two-factor authentication method alongside passwords, with admins following specific instructions to enable passkeys as a password replacement. Google's gradual rollout will bring this innovative feature to business users within 15 days, while consumers already have access to passkeys.

With password-less login, Google Workspace is revolutionizing user authentication, offering a secure and user-friendly approach to accessing digital accounts.
