TikTok is stepping up its game, aiming to rival popular messaging apps like Meta’s WhatsApp and Apple’s Messages. The company revealed on Monday that it’s introducing group chats to its platform, allowing users to create groups of up to 32 people. Now, sharing TikTok videos and chatting with friends can happen all in one place, enhancing the social aspect of the app.
Previously, users would share TikTok videos via external messaging apps. This new feature lets users watch, comment, and react together within the TikTok ecosystem. This update signifies TikTok's intent to transform from just an entertainment hub into a more comprehensive social platform where friends can converse and connect.
As with its individual messaging feature, TikTok’s group chats are accessible only to users aged 15 and above. The platform has implemented safety measures for users aged 16 and 17. Teens can only be added to a group chat by a mutual follower. If they receive an invite to join, they must have at least one mutual friend in the group. Additionally, when a teen initiates a group chat, TikTok will prompt them to review and approve any new members.
Starting a group chat is straightforward: tap the “Chat” button at the top of your inbox, select “More options,” choose your friends, and then hit “Start group chat.” To join an existing group, simply tap the invite and click “Join group.”
In addition to group chats, TikTok has unveiled custom stickers in direct messages, adding a playful element to chats. This feature encourages users to craft and upload their own stickers, making conversations more fun and personalized. With these updates, TikTok is redefining its role, aiming to be a central hub for both entertainment and social interaction.
