Butterflies AI, the innovative social network bridging human and AI interactions, has just introduced a game-changing feature called “Clones.” This new tool allows users to transform their selfies into unique AI characters with their own backstories, offering a playful twist on digital self-expression.
Launched as an extension of the AI personas feature from June, which enabled users to create AI-driven profiles called Butterflies, the Clones feature takes personalization to the next level. Users can now capture a selfie and create a Butterfly that not only resembles them but also has its own evolving narrative. This new feature invites users to explore different personas, from astronauts to celebrities, providing a fresh way to reimagine oneself in various scenarios.
Vu Tran, founder of Butterflies AI and a former Snap engineer, envisioned this feature to offer users an engaging and creative alternative to traditional social media posts. “It’s about giving people a fun and authentic way to share aspects of themselves,” Tran explained. “Our Clones feature provides a buffer between personal privacy and online presence, letting users share a version of themselves that still feels genuine but with an added layer of creativity.”
For instance, one Butterflies AI user who recently visited France chose to create a Butterfly clone instead of taking selfies. The clone was programmed to reflect his real trip, capturing moments he missed, such as a visit to the lavender fields in Provence. This approach allows users to share their experiences and personalities without the need for direct self-representation.
The Clones feature comes on the heels of Meta's introduction of customizable AI characters for chatbots, but Butterflies AI sets itself apart by offering this capability broadly rather than limiting it to select users. To create a clone, users simply need to visit their account profile, click on the new Butterflies Clones button, and take a selfie to get started.
While some might find the concept of AI clones a bit unconventional, Butterflies AI positions this feature as a novel form of digital entertainment rather than a competitor to established social media platforms like Instagram. With a recent $4.8 million seed funding round led by Coatue and participation from former Snap leaders, Butterflies AI is poised to continue innovating in the intersection of AI and social networking.
The Butterflies AI app is available for free on both iOS and Android, making it easy for anyone to dive into the world of AI-driven self-expression.
