HUSSLUP, the entertainment industry job search and networking platform, is taking an “indefinite hiatus” starting this Friday. The news, shared by founder and CEO H Schuster in an email to users, marks a tough moment for the startup, which officially launched to the public in January after three years of invite-only beta testing. With over 15,000 members, HUSSLUP quickly became a valuable tool for professionals in an industry now facing significant challenges.
Schuster pointed to the ongoing difficulties in the entertainment sector as a key reason for the pause, expressing her deep commitment to the platform's mission. "My heart is broken that we are unable to survive this challenging time for the entertainment industry,” she said, acknowledging the struggles many members are experiencing during the industry's downturn.
Hollywood’s employment landscape has been bleak, with the number of jobs in Los Angeles hitting a 30-year low in June, despite a small increase in recent months. The Art Directors Guild reported that 75% of its members were unemployed as of May. The 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, along with layoffs at major studios like Amazon and Pixar, have contributed to the sharp decline in jobs. Meanwhile, advancements in AI tools that streamline production have added further pressure, reducing the demand for certain roles.
Schuster confirmed that the platform’s hiatus is a direct result of this contraction, saying that HUSSLUP has faced significant hurdles in raising funds and driving revenue. The startup secured $2.5 million in funding in 2022, but despite these efforts, it hasn’t been enough to weather the storm. However, Schuster remains hopeful, stating that when the industry rebounds, HUSSLUP aims to relaunch and continue its mission.
This announcement comes shortly after HUSSLUP introduced its AI-powered Greenlight Studio, which offers innovative tools for screenwriters. As the platform pauses at 8 a.m. PT on Friday, all user profiles will be deleted, but a new Facebook group has been created to keep members connected during the hiatus.
HUSSLUP’s future may be uncertain, but Schuster’s optimism for a relaunch reflects a belief that the entertainment industry will eventually regain its footing. Until then, both the platform and its members will need to navigate these challenging times.
