Microsoft is rolling out a significant update to its Windows 11 operating system, bringing new features designed to enhance the overall PC experience. Despite Windows now accounting for just 9% of Microsoft’s $245 billion revenue, its importance remains high. The operating system is not only highly profitable but also plays a key role in driving users toward Microsoft's Azure cloud services. With support for Windows 10 set to end in 2025, Microsoft continues to refine Windows 11 to ensure its relevance and growth.
Since its launch in 2021, Windows 11 has steadily gained popularity, with a 50% increase in active devices year over year, according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. The latest update, known as Windows 11 version 24H2, aims to make everyday computing more efficient, offering improvements like faster file downloads, smarter energy management, and new file compression tools.
Among the standout features, users will find enhanced energy controls, allowing them to reduce power consumption even when their device is plugged in. For those with Bluetooth LE Audio-enabled hearing aids, the ability to directly stream audio to their PC adds convenience. Meanwhile, faster internet speeds can be expected with Wi-Fi 7 support, and a simpler Wi-Fi sharing feature using QR codes makes connecting devices easier.
Other additions include rich HDR backgrounds, more control over mobile files through wireless phone-to-PC integration, and a smaller clock display in the system tray. Compression tools are also built into File Explorer, eliminating the need for third-party programs for formats like 7-Zip and TAR.
To access these new features, users can navigate to the Windows Update section in their Settings app. The update will gradually roll out, starting with devices running versions 22H2 and 23H2.
With these improvements, Microsoft continues to refine the Windows 11 experience, providing users with practical enhancements that improve both productivity and ease of use.
